In celebration of World Sickle Cell and Blood Donor Day, the O.A Initiative in partnership with Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) and the Ekiti State Health Insurance Scheme (EKHIS) hosted a powerful two-day event on June 19th and 20th, 2025, at the College of Nursing Hall, Ado-Ekiti. Themed “Closing the Gap: Our Role in Transforming Advocacy to Actionable Policy for Sickle Cell Care in Ekiti State,” the event featured a thought-provoking panel session, a keynote address, a successful blood donation drive, a launch of the Sickle cell application and the blood donation club.
The panel session brought together a stellar mix of voices from policy, healthcare, and community leadership. Moderated by Dr. Ifeoluwayimika Bamidele, the panelists—Hon. Ayodeji Adegbite, Mrs. Mary Oso-Omotosho, Prof. Olatunya, Dr. Charles Doherty, His Eminence, Revd Dr. Emmanuel Adeyinka Aribasoye and Hon. Dr Olanipekun delivered robust discussions on how advocacy can influence state-level policy changes. They tackled the gaps in healthcare access for individuals with sickle cell disorder (SCD) and emphasized the urgency of integrating sickle cell care into public health financing and insurance programs, most especially creating a tertiary referral centre for sickle cell patients.
The keynote speaker, Prof. Oladele Simeon Olatunya, a distinguished professor of Paediatrics and Child Health, delivered a soul-stirring address that highlighted the burden of sickle cell and emphasized the need for sustainable policies and capacity building among healthcare professionals. Prof. Olatunya challenged stakeholders to move beyond awareness and into practical interventions such as early diagnosis programs, genetic counseling, and subsidized treatments.
An emotional highlight of the event was the recognition and celebration of sickle cell warriors, individuals living courageously with the condition. Blood donors were also honored for their lifesaving contributions, underscoring the importance of community participation in healthcare advancement.
This event marks a turning point in sickle cell advocacy in Ekiti State. By bridging the gap between community engagement and policy dialogue, we are building a future where no one battles sickle cell disease alone or without access to care.
