On Wednesday, 28th July 2026, OA Initiative, in partnership with the Nigeria Youth Futures Fund, celebrated a defining moment in its journey; the graduation of its first cohort of trained Sickle Cell Advocates.
For six months, these passionate young advocates underwent intensive training designed to equip them with the knowledge and skills needed to drive meaningful change. Their learning covered key areas including sickle cell advocacy, community and stakeholder engagement, and the principles of voluntary blood donation.
Their commitment and hard work culminated in the award of certificates endorsed by the Nigerian Red Cross Society, a testament to the quality and significance of the programme.
However, this graduation represents far more than the completion of a training programme. It marks the beginning of a movement.
These advocates are now ambassadors of hope, awareness, and action. They will return to their communities to educate, inspire, challenge harmful misconceptions, promote voluntary blood donation, and champion better outcomes for individuals and families living with sickle cell disease.
For OA Initiative, this milestone is part of a larger vision to build an enduring legacy that extends beyond the founder and the founding team. It is about raising leaders, empowering advocates, and creating a sustainable network of changemakers who will continue advancing the cause for years to come.
History is often remembered through moments like these: when ordinary people are equipped to accomplish extraordinary things.
This first cohort is not simply graduating; they are stepping into a lifelong assignment. Their journey is only beginning, and the movement they now represent has the potential to transform countless lives.
